MAM is a New Zealand artist whose drawings, created with ink and coloured pencil, emerge from the page with a slow meditative patience. The drawings begin with a germ of an idea and slowly take on a life of their own, there is never a predetermined result. It is an intriguing process as dense textural layers are added and subtracted continuously.
The act of mark-making has always intrigued the artist and to face up to an empty page armed with nothing but a single black pen is a joyously visceral experience. It is pure play. MAM's inspiration, and curiosity, lies in the natural world, within and without, and what it is that lies under "the cement mix of our culture".
